This means your candidates’ score are compared against scores of lots of other people so you can see relatively how well they did. With a score of 12 out of 30 for example, we don't know if that's a high score or low score until we know what other people scored. For example the test might be really hard and most people score below 5 out of 30. This is where normed scores come in.
\n

\n
The assessment scores sent to Workable are ‘sten scores’ which are normed scores out of ten. One being the lowest score and ten being the highest. Sten scores follow a normal distribution with most people falling in in the 4-6 range.
\n

\n
When you download and open the PDF reports you can see percentile scores as well as sten scores. Percentile scores are similar to sten scores in that they are normally distributed, except percentile is out of 100. A score of the 30th percentile represents a score higher than 30% of the other scores in the norm group.
\n

\n
This normal distribution shows the distribution of sten and percentile scores.
\n

"},{"id":360011066677,"url":"https://testpartnership.zendesk.com/api/v2/help_center/en-us/articles/360011066677.json","html_url":"https://testpartnership.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360011066677-Extra-Time-e-g-dyslexia","author_id":511341021,"comments_disabled":false,"draft":false,"promoted":false,"position":0,"vote_sum":0,"vote_count":0,"section_id":200263962,"created_at":"2020-07-15T20:43:17Z","updated_at":"2020-07-16T11:04:47Z","name":"Extra Time (e.g. dyslexia)","title":"Extra Time (e.g. dyslexia)","source_locale":"en-us","locale":"en-us","outdated":false,"outdated_locales":[],"edited_at":"2020-07-16T11:04:47Z","user_segment_id":null,"permission_group_id":1537294,"content_tag_ids":[],"label_names":[],"body":"
It is your legal requirement to make 'reasonable adjustments' to accommodate a disability. We will walk through:
\n
Step 1: Creating a project
\n
Step 2: Inviting candidates to the project
\n
Step 3: Viewing results
\n
Step 4: Buying credits
\n
Step 5 (optional): Review your account settings
\n

\n
Step 1: Create a new project
\n
1 (a) Click Projects > Add in the left-hand menu bar

\n

1 (b) Define your project by completing the following fields:

Project Name is anything you like, for example \"Tests for Area Manager\". Bear in mind that candidates will see the names of your projects.

Description (optional) This is useful to describe what the project is, for example you could put \"One numerical test and one verbal test for the position of Manager.\" This description will be visible to candidates. You can enter something or leave this blank.
\n
Email Reports To Me (optional) Tick the box and use this if you want candidates' results to be automatically emailed to someone when each candidate completes the project. Separate multiple email addresses with a comma like this:
hr1@company.com, hr2@company.com
\n
Candidate Can See Their Reports (optional) If you tick this box candidates will be able to see a summary version of their results report.
\n
The 'Pause Project' box should only be ticked if you want the project to be inactive or on hold. Most people leave this box unticked. Only tick this box to deactivate your project.
\n
Advanced Anti-Cheat Detection (optional) This will enable advanced cheat detection features like detecting when the mouse moves outside the screen and if the time taken is abnormally fast.

\n
Next, choose the assessments that candidates will to take.
\n

\n
Once you've selected the Type of test you can then select the specific Test within that category. Finally chose the Norm group you would like to compare your candidates' results against. Norm groups are just who your candidates' scores are compared against. In practice choosing different norm groups only makes a few percentile points difference, but try to pick the most accurate group for your candidates. You can read more about norm groups here. And further details on each test can be found here.
\n
\n
We're always here to help you choose the best assessments. There are four different ways to add candidates to your project:
\n
- Manually type their details (most common for small projects);
- Send a public invite link using an project Access Key; or
- Upload a bulk CSV file
- Integrate with an ATS. Speak to us if you'd like to use an ATS.
\n
In this Quick Start Guide we will follow the first method, as this is what most clients prefer to do. If you have large volumes of candidates you may prefer to follow one of the other methods (use a project Access Key or bulk CSV upload).
\n
2 (a) Click Candidates > Add in the left-hand menu bar

2(b) Complete the following fields:
\n
Project, First Name, Last Name, Email.
\n
The Email field is where we will send the candidate's login details (username and password) so you can put your own email address if you want to receive the login details, or put the candidate's email address if you want our system to send an email direct to the candidate.
\n
Click 'Send Now' and our system will automatically send an email to the email address you have entered as the candidate's email address. You will see a preview of the message before it is sent, which you can edit if you like. To edit the email template go to Projects > List > Email Templates.
\n
The candidate will now receive an email which looks a bit like this:

\n

\n
That's it! Your candidate has now been added to your project and they can start their test by clicking the link in the email they have just received. Now you just wait for the candidate to finish their test. As soon as they finish, their results will automatically appear in the 'Results' section of your account.
\n
\n
Tip: when you invite your first candidate, a preview of the email will appear so you can check it there. You can also edit the email by going to Projects Edit.
\n
\n

Note: credits are required to start a test. If you run out of credits candidates will still be able to complete their assessments but the system will not let you see any of the results until your credit balance is above zero. You can top-up your credits at any time.
\n

\n

\n
Step 3: Download candidates' results
\n
As soon as a candidate has completed any of your projects you can view their results and download PDF reports. If when setting up the project you chose to have reports emailed to you these will arrive in your inbox automatically. If you want to see and download the reports on the system here is how:
\n
3 (a) Click Results > View All in the left-hand menu bar.
\n

If your credit balance is above 0 you will see a list of all the complete and incomplete assessments you are running. If there is nothing in this list then none of your candidates have been added to any of your projects yet.
\n
3 (b) Click the download icon next to the report you want to download.

The most important part of the report is the candidate's percentile score within the norm group. If you need any help interpreting the report have a look at this support article or ask us.
\n
You can also export all your candidates' results to a CSV file by going to Results > List > Export. This is a good way to perform bulk calculations and decisions using Excel.
\n

\n

\n
Step 4: Buying credits
\n
Credits are deducted when a candidate starts a test. You can top-up your credits or buy an annual plan any time by clicking Buy Credits.
\n

\n
If your balance falls below zero credits, your Results page will deactivate and Projects which have been set to automatically email you the reports will stop sending you the reports. So it's a good idea to keep your credit balance positive.
\n
Don't worry if your credit balance does fall below zero; your tests will still remain open and this won't affect your candidates in any way. Candidate will still be able to take their tests. All that happens is you won't be able to see their results until you return your credit balance above zero.
\n
To buy more credits, click the the Account button at the top-right then Buy Credits.
\n
Your credit balance is updated instantly and we will email you with a full VAT receipt.
\n

\n

\n
Step 5 (optional): Review your account settings
\n
There are a couple of settings you should review, most importantly Data Retention settings. By default all candidate date is anonymised after 24 months. If you'd like to change this period go to Account > My Account
\n

\n
Then click Edit Client Details
\n

\n
Scroll down to Data Retention Period > type number of months > Save
\n

\n
Don't forget to save!
\n

\n
You can also upload your logo if you like. This will appear on the assessment pages for your candidates and the PDF reports. Still in the Edit Client Details section, click Upload Logo.
\n

\n
And click Save
\n

\n
That's the basics covered
\n
\n
Here we have covered the most common settings. Here we explain what they mean.
\n
The most important score for aptitude tests is the percentile score (for personality questionnaires see sten scores below). A percentile score shows how your candidate performed relative to the comparison group. When reading the percentile score, it is important to note the comparison group (sometimes called a norm group). Let's look at percentile scores in more detail...
\n
Percentile Scores
\n

\n
The percentile score is shown overlaid on a normal distribution curve to indicate that most peoples' scores cluster around the mean score, with fewer people scoring low and high scores, and even fewer people scoring at the very bottom or very top end. Most people score in the average range.
\n
Sten Scores
\n
Beneath the percentile figure is a green square containing a white number ranging from 1 to 10. This is the sten score. Sten scores can be thought of as percentile scores expressed as a number between 1 and 10 (instead of 1 and 99 for percentiles).

\n
More information on each of the important terms is given below.
\n
Norm Group. The term norm group and 'comparison group' are used interchangeably. Norm groups are used for benchmarking. A 'graduates' norm group for example is a collection of thousands of previous test scores, all taken by graduates. As a result, candidates' scores can be compared against the average score within the norm group, thus benchmarking their score against other graduates. The same can be done for other demographics, such as 'senior executives' or 'managers' etc.
\n
Percentiles: Percentiles are fundamentally different from percentage scores. Percentiles are best explained through examples. If a candidate scores in the 50th percentile, this means that the candidate has scored higher than 50% of the norm group (i.e they got a score which is exactly in the middle of what everyone else got). If a candidate scores in the 90th percentile, they have scored higher than 90% of the norm group, putting them in the top 10%. If a candidate scores in the 10th percentile, they have scored higher than 10% of the norm group, putting them in the bottom 10%.
\n
A percentile score and the norm group give context to your candidate's results for benchmarking purposes.
\n
The alternative to percentiles would be to just give a raw score of say, \"14 out of 20.\" But that wouldn't tell you much without knowing what other people scored. Is 14/20 a good score, a bad score, or average? We don't know, unless we compare it with scores other people achieved. This is what a percentile score does for us.
\n
Sten: This is an abbreviation of “standard ten” and shows the approximate position of a candidate in regard to other candidates within that comparison group or 'norm group'. The sten score effectively represents where the candidate would place on a scale of 1-10, compared to all other candidates when arranged by performance. This can be thought of as simply another way of expressing a percentile score.
\n
What's a high or low score?
\n
We can answer this relative to the norm group. Other people may have different interpretations of what constitutes a 'low' or a 'high' score, but the following classifications are generally accepted:
\n

\n

\n
If you want to talk to one of our consultants about any results, please contact us.
\n

\n

"},{"id":208106895,"url":"https://testpartnership.zendesk.com/api/v2/help_center/en-us/articles/208106895.json","html_url":"https://testpartnership.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/208106895-My-Candidate-Can-t-Log-In","author_id":511341021,"comments_disabled":true,"draft":false,"promoted":false,"position":3,"vote_sum":-1,"vote_count":1,"section_id":200263962,"created_at":"2016-03-30T08:40:59Z","updated_at":"2026-08-10T18:26:08Z","name":"My Candidate Can't Log In","title":"My Candidate Can't Log In","source_locale":"en-us","locale":"en-us","outdated":false,"outdated_locales":[],"edited_at":"2016-03-30T08:46:35Z","user_segment_id":null,"permission_group_id":1537294,"content_tag_ids":[],"label_names":[],"body":"
This is a common request and here are the most frequent reasons why:
\r\n
1) They're trying to register instead of log in. On the log in page (https://www.tptests.com) there are options to login and to register. Sometimes, a candidate is added and they get their username and password emailed to them. But then, the client edits their username to something different. We don't store passwords (for security reasons) but this will send a new randomly-generated password to the email address on file for the candidate. If you're not sure what email this is going to go to, check the Candidate record by logging into your client area and go to the Candidates section. You will see a list of your candidates. Select the one you want to check and click Edit. This will show you the email address associated with that candidate and where all their emails go to. If this isn't right, just change it and click Save. But if you do change their email address we don't automatically re-resend all the previous emails, so you will need to perform any actions (such as password reset) again.
\n

\n
2) Resend a Username
\n
You can see all candidates' usernames by logging into your client area and going to the Candidates section. You can see usernames in the list and edit any of them by selecting one and clicking Edit. If you want to re-send the username and 'welcome email' to the candidate please go to the Results section. Select the candidate you want and then click Re-send Email. This will send an email to the candidate with a link to take the test and their username. It will not re-send their password. Note: we don't recommend changing usernames ones as it can get confusing to keep track of each candidate and this action doesn't re-send any login details. Instead of changing usernames we recommend just making the old one inactive and creating a new username. Norm groups are used for benchmarking, and are the best way to see how a score compares with the scores other people got.
\n
A straightforward 'raw score' of say 16 out of 20 only tells us something if we know what other people got in the same test. Is 16 out of 20 a high score, a low, score, or about average for that test? We don't know until we can compare it with what other people got. We need a benchmark.
\n
This is where percentile scores come in. They tell us the percent of scores which are lower than the score being considered. This is better understood with some examples...
\n
For example: if a candidate scores in the 90th percentile, their score is higher than 90% of the scores achieved by other people in the norm group. In other words they are in the top 10%. A percentile score of the 50th percentile means 50% scored lower than the candidate and 50% scored higher; this score is exactly 'average' compared with the people in the norm group.
\n
The norm group you choose is important so you can compare your candidates against a meaningful benchmark. You pick the norm group for each test when you setup our Project. Test Partnership has built many norm groups for you to choose from, such as for example Graduates, Apprentices, Managers and Executives, General Population...and so on.
\n

\n
What is a good score?
So now you understand about percentile scores and norm groups you will have a sense of what a good score is. Consider some examples:
\n
Candidate A scores in the 56th percentile against a Graduate norm group. This means their score was higher than 56 of all the other graduates who have taken that test. That's not bad, in fact it's almost exactly average.
\n
Candidate B scores in the 19th percentile against a General Population norm group. This means their score was in the bottom 19% of all the people who have taken that test. That's not great, but still better than 19% of people. Some employers consider the bottom 19% not to be good enough, so they could ask the candidate about their performance and possibly select them out of this round.
\n
Candidate C scores in the 83rd percentile against a Managers norm group. This means their score is higher than 83% of other managers who have taken that test. That's very good and probably merits progressing them to the next round of selection.

We have another article here on how to interpret scores. If a candidate scores in the 50th percentile, this means that the candidate's score is higher than 50% of the scores achieved by people in the norm group. If a candidate scores in the 90th percentile, they have scored higher than 90% of the norm group, putting them in the top 10%. If a candidate scores in the 10th percentile, they have scored higher than 10% of the norm group, putting them in the bottom 10%.
\r\n
A percentile score together with the norm group give context to your candidate's results. The alternative would be to just give a raw score of say, 14 out of 20. But that wouldn't tell you much without knowing what other people scored. Is 14/20 a good score, a bad score, or average? We don't know, unless we compare it with scores other people achieved. That's where a percentile score comes in handy.
\r\n

\r\n
Sten Score
\r\n
This is an abbreviation of standard ten'. This is can be thought of as another way of expressing a percentile score, but on a scale of 1 to 10 instead of 1 to 100. Like percentiles, sten scores are not in a linear scale; they fit a normal distribution curve to represent the fact that most people's scores bunch around the average with very few people at the extremities.
\r\n

\r\n
Z Score
\r\n
You don't really need to worry about this; the z-score is a measure psychologists use to calculate the percentile score. If you are performing statistical analyses on the scores you might want to know the z-score but for most people this is not useful.
\r\n

\r\n
We also have a more in-depth article on how to interpret reports HERE.
\r\n

"},{"id":202582611,"url":"https://testpartnership.zendesk.com/api/v2/help_center/en-us/articles/202582611.json","html_url":"https://testpartnership.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/202582611-How-do-I-know-if-an-email-has-been-sent-to-a-candidate","author_id":511341021,"comments_disabled":false,"draft":false,"promoted":false,"position":10,"vote_sum":0,"vote_count":0,"section_id":200263962,"created_at":"2015-03-05T09:12:02Z","updated_at":"2016-03-07T15:53:44Z","name":"How do I know if an email has been sent to a candidate?","title":"How do I know if an email has been sent to a candidate?","source_locale":"en-us","locale":"en-us","outdated":false,"outdated_locales":[],"edited_at":"2015-06-22T13:22:54Z","user_segment_id":null,"permission_group_id":1537294,"content_tag_ids":[],"label_names":[],"body":"
As soon as you create a candidate (by clicking \"Candidates\" then \"Create\") our system automatically sends them an invitation email containing their login details. Adaptive tests have considerable advantages over our old 'legacy' tests. Clients should only use our legacy tests where continuity is is important, for example in older projects which are still running. For all new projects, we recommend our adaptive range of tests.
